Shame Alvin wears armour now, otherwise the series would have been over in this book. Ok, the Monster of the Amber Slavelands is extremely creepy. We finally learn some of Fishlegs’s backstory, including that he is indeed part Berserk (also part Murderous) and that his mother actually did want him but was forced to give him up. While he didn’t realise it was Hiccup he was talking to, it was nice to see Stoick doesn’t blame Hiccup for what happened in the last book. King’s Lost Things Acquired: The Dragon Jewelįavourite Dragon Species Introduced: Deadly Shadow Hiccup, Fishlegs, Camicazi, Toothless, the Wodensfang, Stormfly, the Windwalker and the Deadly Shadow officially become the Ten Companions of the Dragonmark (the Shadow counts as three). Furious vows to never again entrust the killing of Hiccup to another since this kid has a degree in Befriending Very Dangerous Dragons, and makes a cool speech about it. War breaks out as the slaves become the Dragonmarkers and attack Alvin’s loyalists, then Furious shows off his impeccable sense of timing again by launching an attack at that moment that forces the two human armies to retreat. Valhallarama attempts to kill Alvin, and then takes the Slavemark and renames it the Dragonmark. Unfortunately, Valhallarama shows up again and takes Hiccup to Alvin. Hiccup is then attacked by the Beast of the Amber Slavelands, but manages to kill it, and then finds both Fishlegs and the Jewel. The Deadly Shadow sees Fishlegs’s lobster necklace on Hiccup and remembers that he was once Fishlegs’s guardian. Hiccup is exposed and the witch tries to force him to find the Jewel, but the Deadly Shadow chooses that moment to attack, dragging Hiccup and Camicazi off. The group go out to hunt for the Dragon Jewel, and Gobber teaches Snotlout a lesson in humility by smashing up his yacht. In the prison, everyone refuses to acknowledge Fishlegs’s existence, and Wanderer slave Eggingarde (indirectly) tells Hiccup that Fishlegs went missing out in the Amber Slavelands. Meanwhile, Furious sends a Deadly Shadow dragon to assassinate Hiccup. He then travels to the Amber Slavelands and infiltrates Prison Darkheart by disguising himself as a slave, and meets Stoick, Gobber and Snotlout again, the first two now slaves.

Major Plot Elements: Hiccup is attacked by his own mother due to a bad misunderstanding, but manages to escape. Once again, spoiler warning for not just this book, but all of them. In doing so, he will learn the truth about his longtime friend. Now an Outcast and a vigilante with only his three dragons for company, Hiccup must infiltrate Prison Darkheart to find the Dragon Jewel and rescue Fishlegs.
